GETTING STARTED
1. How do I declare my Gender,
Women, and Sexuality Studies major? How about the Gender, Women,
and Sexuality Studies or GLBT Studies minors?
Make an appointment to meet with the Gender, Women, and Sexuality
Studies adviser by calling (612) 624-6809, or stop into the Gender,
Women, and Sexuality
Studies advising office in 419 Ford Hall. You can also e-mail gwssadv@umn.edu.

Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies Major or minor
GLBT Studies minor 3.
Who is my adviser? Why do I need to meet with an adviser?
Advising is a collaborative process with
you at the center. During your academic career, you will have at
least two advisers. One is the college adviser who oversees the
student's entire degree progress. Gender, Women, and Sexuality
Studies majors have
CLA Advisers through CLA Advising, usually in the CLA Society and
Culture
Student Community. Honors degree candidates
in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies have CLA advisers in the Honors
Program office. Check out CLA's
online advising service, as well.
A student's other adviser is the major department
adviser. Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies majors and students
considering a
Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies major have a departmental
adviser in the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies Advising Office,
419 Ford, (612)-624-6809.
4. I took Women’s
Studies courses at another university. Can they count toward
my
U of M B.A. in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies?
Courses may transfer to the major after evaluation of a course
syllabus and sample work from your other university have been evaluated.
Please make an appointment to meet with the Gender, Women, and
Sexuality Studies
adviser, and bring as much information about the course(s) as you
can. We do have agreements with some local colleges and universities
regarding accepting transfer coursework without a petition. Please
contact the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies advising office
for further information.
MAKING PROGRESS
1. I have a registration hold – what
do I do?
Check to make sure the hold is from the Gender, Women, and Sexuality
Studies department and that it is preventing you from registering
for the upcoming semester.
You can check this at the University’s
One Stop page. If you find that you have a hold from the Gender,
Women, and Sexuality Studies advising office, schedule an appointment
to meet with the
Gender, Women,
and Sexuality Studies adviser.
2.
I am planning to study abroad. Do I need to meet with a Gender,
Women, and Sexuality Studies adviser?
Yes, you will need to schedule an appointment with both your major
and college (and minor, if relevant) advisers before you depart
AND you will need to meet with your advisers on your return to have
courses approved. Please remember that pre-study abroad planning
does not in itself mean that courses you take abroad are approved
for the major, which is why you need to meet with an adviser on
your return, providing him or her with additional information on
the courses you took. For further information on study abroad, please
contact the Learning
Abroad Center.
3. What is a good
way to balance my workload? How many Gender, Women, and Sexuality
Studies classes can I take at a time?
We recommend that you do not take more than two or three Gender,
Women, and Sexuality Studies classes per semester, so you can balance
major requirements with those outside the major. However, this
is a recommendation
and we understand that specific circumstances may differ. If you
wish to discuss semester planning further, please schedule an
appointment
with an adviser.
HONORS
1. What are the requirements for Gender, Women,
and Sexuality Studies Honors?
To participate in the Gender, Women, and
Sexuality Studies honors program, students must first apply for admission
to
the Honors
Program and plan a major program with the Gender, Women, and
Sexuality Studies Director of Undergraduate Studies or the Gender,
Women, and Sexuality
Studies adviser (Advising: 419 Ford Hall, 612-624-6809). For further
details, see our honors
page.
2.
Which Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies Honors courses are available
this semester?
Please
see the course guide for details. (PDF)
3. Honors Senior Project
Talk with the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies Director of
Undergraduate Studies or the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies
adviser about your senior project if you are in Honors. This
project should
be a major research or creative
thesis. The Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies senior project
counts as the honors thesis when this project is undertaken
as honors
by contract in
any course satisfying the senior project requirement. It must conform
to the Department’s guidelines for the senior project. When
it is also a summa thesis, it must conform to the standards set
by the primary thesis adviser and thesis committee, the student
and the CLA Honors Division.
SENIOR PROJECT
1. Can I complete my senior project during the
summer?
Rarely. The department generally is unable to accommodate student
projects during the summer, but some exceptions are occasionally
made.
Please contact the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies advising
office if you are concerned about your senior project.
2. Can I complete my senior
project as a directed study?
Yes. When doing a directed study, whether
it is a senior project or another independent project, advance planning
is essential. Please be sure to meet with the Gender, Women, and
Sexuality Studies
adviser prior to arranging a directed study. If you plan to complete
your senior project as a directed study, meet with the Gender, Women,
and Sexuality adviser no later than the semester before you plan
to do your project.
3.
Can I complete my senior project at another university?
In most cases, the answer is no. Students
should plan to complete their senior project on the U of MN Twin
Cities campus.
4. I am a double major.
Do I have to do my senior project in Gender, Women, and Sexuality
Studies?
No, you can choose the major in which to
complete your senior project, although you must meet credit requirements
in both majors. The exception to this is Honors students who must
complete their senior project in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies
if Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies is their Honors major.
CAREER, GRADUATION & INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
1. Where can I go to get
information about internships and job opportunities?
The University has a number of resources for information about internships
and job opportunities relevant to Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies

and job opportunities in the area. For more information, visit the
CCLC office, 135 Johnston Hall, where you can meet with staff and
access career resources and job and internship listings.
2. How do I apply for
graduation?
While finishing up your degree during your last year at the University,
meet with both the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies adviser
and college adviser
to make sure you’re on track. Then, very early in your last
semester, apply for graduation. For information on the application
process and deadlines, visit Onestop
CLA also offers a “Steps
to Graduation” page where you can find suggestions for
planning your last year at the University.

to meet with you and talk about your individual interests and aspirations,
as well
as assisting you in exploring career options.
